Birthday Cakes

Growing up, for every birthday we had, my dad would make my brother, my sister and I unique birthday cakes for our special days. He usually just made a chocolate cake and cut out shapes and decorated them. I love them all and think that he did very well. In this day and age, where everything can be bought ready made at such a cheap price, there is something to be said for home made cakes because the memories (and photos) last a long time.

This fish was made for my first birthday and it is crazy to think that it was all the way back in 1988. Where does the time go?
For my second birthday there was a rabbit. I think it is adorable and the almond teeth are a nice touch.
I can't find a picture of my third cake but I have two pictures of my fourth birthday cakes. The house was for the birthday party with my friends.
The jelly train (another one of my favourites), was brought into kindy. I just think it is so perfect.
For my fifth birthday there was the number five. Running out of ideas perhaps?
Not yet, because there was more cake and the number six for my next birthday.
This is also a favourite, the butterfly cake for my seventh birthday. The banana body and straw ears are just sensational.
My sister's first birthday cake was super cute too. Love then matching candles and delicious frosting. There just can't be enough frosting, ever.
Fast forwarding and this was my 21st birthday cake. It was made with love and care in between exams and assignments and it was another good one.
For my 22nd birthday my gorgeous BFF made me a success tart which is my favourite cake in the whole wide world. Such a good cake and such a great present.
Another BFF made delicious jelly shots which belong at any student party. It is a must!
For my 25th birthday my gorgeous cousins made me this cake with lovely decorations.
What can I say, I am a dessert person and don't feel like a birthday is complete without an accompanying cake, preferably with ice cream on the side.

How do you like your birthday cakes? Do you have a favourite?

Xx I

  1. Gorgeous! My mum always made me amazing cakes, the highlight was the pink castle for my 3rd birthday, and the Oscar the Grouch for my 5th. Now my darling sister makes them for me as I live away from Mum and Dad, this year she made me a mint chocolate creation!

  3. Such a beautiful post Ingrid. On the weekend I made a pirate ship cake for my son's 3rd birthday. This post has got me thinking about how much fun it would be to make a photo album just for my boys birthday cakes.

  5. My mama couldn't make elaborate cakes but they were always delicious. I'm usually the cake maker in my house - for my sisters 30th this year I made her an amazing cheesecake with something or other (can't remember) and it was probably one of the best cakes I've ever made but I agree with you Ingy: making that cheesecake cost me around $50 and buying one would have been about $30.
