The Weekend Review: Townsville

Last Thursday we went to Townsville to visit a friend and it ended up being a lovely weekend. It was great to get out of the city, and we spent the first weekend of spring in warm weather with lots of sunshine. As usual I packed the morning before our flight but I didn't forget anything this time so my packing skills are improving. My holiday arm party consisted of white and gold Hermes, coral MollyFB and a gold BelleNoel bracelet.

We were early at the airport so that obviously meant shopping for me and a quick dash for one of my favourite combinations: Cappucino and pain au chocolat. Delicious!
My inflight essentials included the Lanolips 101 ointment, the Rose Balms Intense and head phones. However, I didn't even use the headphones for the whole weekend so I should have just left them at home. The flight to Townsville was 2 hours and 45 minutes from Sydney and 2 hours and 35 minutes return.
When we arrived our friend picked us up from the airport and took us up to a lookout over Townsville. The most touristy thing we did over the weekend and it was a gorgeous day.
In the carpark two peacocks had convened and I was busting for them to show their gorgeous feathers. They were very tame and seemed cool like cucumbers.
In the evening we went out for Mexican food at Cactus Jack's. We started out with a jug of margharitas and they were absolutely delicious.
For dessert I ordered the chocolate nachos (their specialty) which we all shared since I was so full that I only managed to eat three chips. Afterwards we went to the movies and saw Batman which I really liked but it was a very long movie, I was too stuffed to eat any popcorn and I couldn't understand everything Bane (the villain) was saying because he was wearing a mouth-covering mask.
On Friday morning I took to the shops wearing my Rayban sunnies, H&M collar, See by Chloe bag, Tigerlily dress and Haviianas.
In the afternoon we hung by the pool and I read the third book in the Hunger Games series for hours on my Kindle. What's so great with the Kindle is that the screen does not glare like my phone or iPad does so you can read comfortably on it in the sun. When I finished the Hunger Games Mike was thrilled because he felt like he could finally have his girlfriend back. I really liked the series and read the three books in less than a week. I was hooked!
On Saturday morning we went to Magnetic Island and it was absolutely glorious! We took a ferry boat for about 20 minutes and were on the island ready for a great day. We rented every girl's dream - a pink and white topless Barbie car and it was hilarious.
We did some driving around the not so large island and moved onto our next project: Snorkeling. We were all fitted with fluoro gear and were ready for the ocean.
I have been lucky enough to snorkle on the Great Barrier Reef before and it is truly one of those bucket list items. I just love it and it is like snorkeling in a big aquarium and you keep spotting fish from the movie Finding Nemo. Although we had been told that we wouldn't need stinger suits, we kept being stung by sea lice and it was not enjoyable. Whilst I really enjoyed the snorkeling (we swam out to the yellow dots you can see in the foreground), I didn't love the sea lice and they left angry red marks on me afterwards. Thankfully they disappeared after a couple of hours.
We also went for another couple of dips at another beach and it was so nice to be in the water again. It was the perfect day to celebrate the arrival of spring and I am hoping the water temperature in Coogee will rise rapidly soon.
When we got home I untangled the mess that was my hair with the EverPure shampoo and conditioner from L'Oreal and I was very impressed. My hair ended up being smooth and shiny plus a couple of shades lighter because of the sun. The bubble wash from SugarBaby was also fabulous and left my skin feeling moisturised and refreshed.
In the afternoon we watched 21 Jump Street (hilarious) before going to the Casino for dinner and drinks. I discovered the deliciousness that is the Dirty Granny cider (complete with crocheted label) and I do hope I can find it in Sydney because it is nice and refreshing.
Photos aren't encouraged at casinos (possibly for cheating reasons?) so I took a sneaky one on the roulette table. I can't say that I am a fan of roulette because I just don't understand how you can win on it. My tiny bets did not pay off and I got told off twice by the dealer for doing the wrong thing (ie not putting money on the table, putting a too low bet on a square) but I learnt quickly. Too be quite honest, casinos don't sit very right with me because yes you can have fun and play within reason, but you have to be mentally strong not to become addicted to the thrill (and there were plenty of hardcore players there) and it should just be a rare occasion thing. Unless you are in Vegas because all bets are off then.
On Sunday morning I enjoyed a caramel and blueberry scone feast with some lovely cream and jam and it was very delicious. The cafe we were at had won best scone of Townsville in 2005 and were still mentioning it on the menu. They also sell a $50 cup of coffee because it comes from Indonesian animal droppings. Tempting as it was to blow $50 on a coffee, we just stuck with our regular drinks.
There was also a delicious caramel pie for dessert but I could only have three bites again. As you can imagine, Mike wasn't too disappointed in having to finish it.
We had a lovely weekend in Townsville and were sad to leave on Sunday afternoon. Our flight was thankfully on time so we landed as the sun went down. It was absolutely gorgeous and one of those special moments.

How was your weekend? Have you seen the latest Batman movie? Do you like scones?
