The Weekend Review: Switching Off

I thought it was time for another Weekend Review post, it's been a long time since the last one. I had a very unusual weekend but it was also a very good one. I finished Life of Pi by Yann Martel which is simply one of the best books I've ever read. Pi is stuck on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger for triple-digit days. Crazy huh? The story includes how he grew up in a zoo and how life is on the lifeboat, and let's just say, I don't want to be shipwrecked anytime soon!
Friday afternoon Cait (Mike's sister) and I did support crew for Mike and his team because they were running/walking 100 km in the Trailwalker event. You read that right, ONE HUNDRED KM! Actually, it was 101.5 km because a fire earlier in the year forced them to extend the course. This picture is from checkpoint 4 around 6pm and we were still smiling then. They had about 42 km to go at this point.

Naturally, being a support crew means that the day can be very long depending on the team's result. We had Thai food for dinner, I had a McFlurry with malteesers at midnight, and I bought a pack of Smarties and some cookbooks at a gas station at 2am
The plan was for their team to finish at midnight but it was not to be. Cait and I were at the finish line feeling very cold, and a little refreshed after a nap, waiting for them to come in at 4am. Whilst waiting I was very tempted to get a sneaky photo of me having finished the event, since being support crew is doing the hard yards too.

Very impressively, they finished in just under 21 hours, and were very happy to be home. With sore feet and tired heads, the thought of bed sounded fantastic. Mike and I went to bed at 5am and didn't wake up until 3-4pm on Saturday. We went and had burgers with his parents and that ended up being the only meal we had that day. I also rented American Pie on Saturday night and I thought it was hilarious.
On Sunday we went for lunch at Newport Arms which is in a beautiful spot. I wonder how many million dollars was floating in the water?
I also had lots of time for drinking tea in the sun. Such a lovely way to relax and it was nice to ignore emails, twitter and the world.
Now that it is Monday I am wondering where the time went? I have also started reading the Hunger Games and although I was sceptical at first, I'm really enjoying it and want to finish it as soon as I can.

How was your weekend? How often do you switch off?

Xx I
