Beauty Boxes: My Choice

I have enjoyed the concept of beauty boxes since they were released in Australia last year and by February I was subscribed to four boxes and essentially spending $60 a month on samples (and sometimes full-sized products) but I had no choice in what to receive. Now surprises are fun but I can actually spend $60 on something significant each month or, if I listen to my favourite economist - the Barefoot Investor - I probably should be putting the money in my Mojo account. $15 per box does add up when you subscribe to multiple boxes and I was trying to figure out which boxes to keep and which boxes to unsubscribe to. I have never been good at making cut-throat decisions and I just didn't want to think about it too much so I decided to undescribe from them all. As my boyfriend will confirm, I don't have the space (or enough face) to try all the products I am receiving and I had to put a stop to this product-tsunami before it overtook my bedroom/bathroom/handbags.
On a Saturday night a couple of weeks ago I emailed Lust Have It, Glossybox, Bellabox and I Love This Box saying how much I had enjoyed receiving lovely samples but I had to unsubscribe because I was running out of time to use and enjoy the products. I was surprised to receive a response from Bellabox straight away, which is excellent service on a Saturday. The other sites responded within 2-3 days and it was all very simple. Because I had used Paypal for two of the sample sites, I had to unsubscribe my regular payment there before they could confirm that my subscribtion was cancelled. My wallet is feeling much lighter already too, if only I would stop doing jet lagged online shopping in the middle of the night.

In terms of which box was my favourite, I would have to say that Lust Have It and Glossybox always had great boxes. The only issue was that Glossybox quickly earnt themselves a bad reputation due to customer service issues and also, in the last Glossybox  (which I was really happy with), some ladies got lip tattoos and other not so valuable things and the boxes just didn't compare. I am also not sure if there really is a market for five sample boxes (Beauty Basket has also launched, but I haven't tried them) because although Australia is a big country, there are a lot of logistics and brand management involved to ensure each box becomes number one. Which they all can't be.

My advise to you would be to think carefully about which brands each website offers so that you are not disappointed if you get a tiny sunscreen sample or a Kerastase sachet because, as it is a surprise sample service, you don't get to choose which products to receive. Perhaps you are better off not subscribing and buying that full-size product you have wanted for so long? Or if you have the time and make the effort, you can subscribe to one box one month and another one the next to switch things up a little. At the end of the day, all you can do is written on my favourite poster which takes pride on the wall in my bed room.
What are your ideas around this subject? Do you have many subscriptions or one? Will you be culling? xx

  1. I've still signed up to all 5! EKKK! My Beauty Basket ended last month. I really want to resign but will for only 3 months then decide. Since they have only done 3 baskets its hard to say how good they will be in the future.

I am thinking of dropping GB and depending on how the next bellabox is, I might drop them. I used to love them, but the last 2 boxes haven't been their best.

  2. I've been a subscriber to BellaBox since day one, then I joined Ilovethisbox, had some issues with customer service, cancelled my subscription and joined GlossyBox! Now I'm regretting the switch as I was one of the members who got the "crappy" box (and I'm being nice about it) I got 3 very cheap lip products! Waiting on this month's Glossybox to decide to stick to it or not.
I must say I Love Bellabox!

  3. Great post Ingrid, it must have taken strong willpower to unsub from all four.

Unfortunately I am not as strong as you and still subbed to the four, I havn't tried beauty basket and I don't intend to due to "not liking the idea of a basket" thats my excuse anyway to keep me away from their site!

Maybe one day I will be as strong as you and at least drop two of them! For now I am $60 poorer a month and have cute little boxes coming out of my ears and samples all over the house!

  4. I have only subscribed to Glossybox but the prodz were rank. Especially the hideous acne skincare range. Will receive the next one shortly and will probably unsubscribe unless it blows me away!

  5. I can't believe you unsubbed from ALL of them! I only dropped two, LHI and Glossybox and ironically, LHI then announced one of my most lusted after products were in their March box, so I resubbed. :P

Oh, the agony of indecision...this just reiterates my theory that the moment I drop something, that's when I would've gotten something awesome!

  6. Wow! What a big step! It is definitely a bit of a buzz getting a package of fun beauty stuff once a month, and trying out new products. However, when the items are not great and don't really suit you, it really is a big fat waste of money! I would much rather put my money towards a lovely beauty item that I will enjoy and that suits me! Well done you for being strong!

  8. Hi MsFaby, it's a tough choice and almost a can't win-situation. This is why I chose to just cut it all off because I didn't want to miss out on one I really wanted and receive a bad box from someone else. Instead I will just miss out and I am fine with it xx

  9. Hi Joanne, I can't say it was as much willpower as it was just I was happy with what I had received and that was that. My postman is also pretty bad (never rings the bell even though I am home) so I was just exhausted going to the post office all the time: I look forward to seeing what you will be receiving though, I'll stay tuned xx

  11. So true MM, it's such a hard decision which one to cancel so I just cut the line. I'll rather use the products I have and then buy something exciting when I want it. I look forward to seeing that item you are so interested in:) xx

  12. It certainly was a big step but it felt right and that's why I did it. There are so many more exciting things out there to try and I want to choose what I bring to my apartment since space is a commodity. I will make sure to spend (or save) the $60 wisely xx

  13. You're so right...I had a big session tidying up my samples and everything the other night as space is such a precious commodity in my flat.

I have updated on my LHI post and you might understand why...ironically, though, I wasn't as impressed as I thought I'd be! A new post coming tomorrow with a proper explanation.:)
